At Mashrek, we believe in empowering students to acheive their true potential and become passionate, engaged future leaders, who take pride in their culture and heritage and pursue their purpose in life. We aim to aid our students in improving their subjective well-being and understand its direct impact on heightened academic performance, agency and achieveing a sense of meaning.

Defining Student Well-Being

Student well-being is generally described as a subjective experience where students feel satisfied with themselves, their relationships and experiences and having the ability to experience positive feelings and moods, engage with their community, relate with what they learn and do and believe that it gives them some sense of purpose and meaning.

The well-being of children and young people is heightened when they feel a sense of belonging, form healthy connections with others and experience safe and trusting relationships with the adults in their life, which in turn allows them to thrive and flourish.

“Mashrek students are at the center of our whole –school approach to well-being guided by the necessary values to improve their self-concept & well-being and supported by the skills acquired through the well-being curriculum."

Mashrek believes that well-being is best promoted through a multi-component approach with students at the center, empowered by the necessary skills to improve their well-being and each of the five elements of our whole-school approach to well-being. The five key elements of our whole-school approach to well-being focus on school leadership, school ethos, inclusion, agency and purpose and partnerships. Additionally, we believe that applying a values-centered approach which focuses on integrity, optimism, self-esteem, compassion, passion and resilience helps our students learn and practive healthy attitudes to make more responsible and balanced decisions.

Mindfulness at Mashrek

We aspire to cultivate a learning environment where our entire community is supported in positive emotional development and in developing healthy coping skills. Being mindful is about bringing awareness to the experiences happening in the present moment without judgement. We focus on students' well-being socially, emotionally and physically. As a community, we practice mindfulness and breathing so that information can flow to the prefrontal cortex for processing. It is important that students become aware of their emotional intelligence, self-regulation and the way the brain works.

At the KG level, students engage in daily mindful meditation practices twice a day. Students also enjoy listening to stories read aloud and turning them into yoga practices. These stories are integrated into their units of inquiry. As for Primary School students, Mashrek implements a programe focusing on breathing and guided mindfulness with the support of the Mind-Up curriculum, which has an extraordinary capacity to strengthen the body-mind-spirit connection in learners. As students grow older, mindfulness practices shift towards mindful breathing, gaining focus and attention on the present moment, becoming aware of our thoughts and actions and learning how to cope with stress.

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is ensuring the safety and welfare of all members of our school community. At Mashrek, we aim to provide a learning environment in which children and young people feel safe, secure, respected and heard. Our Safeguarding Policy outlines the various procedures implemented to ensure the collective and individual responsibility and preventative actions of our school to ensure that all children are protected from deliberate or unintentional acts that might lead to the endangering/risking of their safety and well-being.
